General FAQs...
Do EV chargers need Wi-Fi?
Some chargers connect via Wi-Fi, whilst others (like the Ohme Home Pro/ePod) use a built-in roaming SIM that works off mobile signal. Take a look at our charger page for more information.
Can I take my EV charger with me when I move house?
Yes. We can remove your charger, make the old property safe, and reinstall it at your new home. Take a look at our guide Can I take my charger with me.
How long does it take to get my EV charger installation date?
Once you’ve accepted your quote, we can usually install within 2 weeks.
Do I need to own an electric car to have a home EV charger installed?
No. Many customers have their home charging point installed before their electric car arrives, so it’s ready to go from day one. Our engineers use specialist testing equipment to confirm everything is working, even if your EV isn’t there yet.
EV Charger FAQs...
Can my friends and family use my charger as well?
Of course, they just need to plug in and in some cases you might need to ‘allow’ the charge to start in the app.
Is my charger secure?
Yes, most chargers come with built in safety and security features, for example, you can set a 4-digit pin on the MyEnergi Zappi and without this the unit will not charge. We can also suggest a few simple steps you can take for extra piece of mind.
Are home EV chargers universal?
Yes. All chargers we fit use the Type 2 connector, the UK standard compatible with every modern EV.
Can my charger work with smart tariffs?
Absolutely. Many EV chargers integrate with suppliers like Octopus, OVO, and EDF so you can charge at the cheapest overnight rates.
How long will it take to charge my vehicle?
It depends on your charger however as a guideline, most 7.4kw chargers will fully charge a vehicle in between 7-9 hours – perfect for overnight charging.
Which electric car chargers do Mint Energy install?
We supply and install all leading brands of EV charge points including Ohme, Easee, Hypervolt, and MyEnergi. If you’re unsure of which charge point you’re looking for, we can help you choose the best charger based on your vehicle, property, and charging habits.
What’s the difference between tethered and untethered (universal) EV chargers?
A tethered charger has a fixed cable attached — convenient but visible. An untethered charger has a universal socket so you use your own lead, keeping things tidier.
Installation FAQs...
How long does an EV charger installation take?
A standard install takes around 3 hours, with your electricity off for up to 45 minutes. Bespoke installs (e.g. long/tricky cable runs or consumer unit upgrades) may take longer. See ‘Your installation day’ guide for more details about the installation.
Do I need to be at home during installation?
Someone over 18 must be present when we start (to confirm charger location and cable route) and at the end (to go through the app). You don’t need to stay for the whole 3 hours.
How much cabling is included in a standard installation?
Up to 10m of cabling is included. If you need more, we’ll confirm the cost before starting.
What if my installation needs extra work?
We’ll always advise beforehand if any extras are needed such as a consumer unit upgrade, trunking for internal cable runs or ground work. If your installation is not standard we will likely request a video call or onsite survey before we can provide you with a quote. Our quotes are always accurate so you know what the cost is before you decide whether to go ahead.
